PBS NOVA - Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives

Thursday October 16, 2008
I've grown to be quite a fan of the PBS series NOVA. On the most recent episode, the commercial for next week's episode indicated that it would be called "Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives." The commercial made it clear that the show was about parallel worlds in physics, and about a father/son relationship. Beyond that, I wasn't sure what the episode would be about.

This review by Ms. Maggie Moo certainly makes it sound interesting, and it appears you certainly don't need intensive physics knowledge to appreciate it.

The film is about Mark Oliver Everett's quest to understand his father's work. Who is Mark Oliver Everett? Who is his father? Hugh Everett III, the discoverer of the Many Worlds Interpretation of quantum physics. The show not only explores the physics of this phenomenon, but also tells the personal story of a man trying to make contact with the life and work of his deceased father.

I was able to find another article from last year, speaking about the same show when it originally showed on BBC Four in England. The quote from Mark Everett on this site is quite interesting, and gives glimpses into the personal narrative that will be related in the show.

The show airs on PBS on October 21, at 8:00 pm. Starting on October 22, the episode looks like it will be available online through the PBS NOVA website.

excellent story, just seen on PBS about a man and his father. Great explanation of Quantum Physics, as well.
