The Planet Problem

Wednesday August 16, 2006
What is a planet?

This is a question that is on the minds of the International Astronomical Union now, as they attempt to formalize a definition of planet. Depending on the final results, our solar system could end up with anywhere from 8 to 12 planets when the space dust settles.

Nick Greene, our About Space Guide, has been following the debate regarding this issue as it has developed over the last week or so. Check out some of the About Space commentary on the issue:

A final decision is expected from the International Astronomical Union at meeting this month. Keep looking here and at About Space for more information as it unfolds.

I like the proposed definition. As much as anything, it should make it easier to say ‘this extrasolar orbiting object is a planet’ or otherwise, without some corner case messing you up. Charon is the surprise, of course. The Dawm mission could clarify things for Vesta, at least.

Down the line, i’m hoping that the IAU decides we have at least 24 planets. Kids have it too easy these days.
