Definition: In theoretical physics, a string is a one-dimensional filament of energy. Strings are typically believed to be microscopic in size, smaller than even the Planck length (although this is sometimes in dispute). A string is a fundamental object in string theory, along with a brane.

The typical interpretation of string theory involves viewing all fundamental particles in the universe as manifestations of these fundamental strings, and the way they are configured. One of the major goals of string theory is to determine the ways in which the configurations need to be set up to most closely resemble the particles that we observe in our own universe.
