Sean Carroll, over at the Cosmic Variance blog, recently had an interesting blog post called Science and Religion Are Not Compatible, focusing largely on the idea that religion makes factual claims which run contrary to established scientific findings. He followed this up by asking What Questions Can Science Answer? I won't wade too much into this debate, but do find the discussions interesting, so for those who would like to find out more, I recommend both blogs, as well as this one by Lubos Motl of the Reference Frame blog.

RELIGION IS THE PHONEY EXPLANATION OF THINGS THE

i believe that there is no god, heaven, hell, satan, or any of that. i just dont see how they could all exist up in the sky and being all god like and heavenly or some dude down underground where the middle of the earth is supposed to be but dont get me wrong i respect people who believe in god or whatever religion u are, its ur opinion. but what really bothers me is that people are judging me about my beliefs. a lot of people that are strong believers in god are very predjudice and a lot of times think im a bad person for not believing in their holy man in the sky….i dont like religion one bit. i think its just another way to be predjudice about people. just like racism, sexism, etc. well thats just my opinion.
Contemporary astrophysics says that dark is 25% and dark energy about 70% of the critical density of the Universe. They cannot be observed or recorded by any current instruments. These widely accepted theories imply that science can now study only 5% of this Universe.
In 1959, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, at the University of Chicago’s Yerkes Observatory, introduced me to mysticism and the universality of the Universe. While many scientists believe that science and religion can co-exist harmoniously, few would grant the same to mysticism.
In “Quantum Questions / Mystical Writings of the World’s Greatest Physicists” (Shambala Publications 2001), Ken Wilber includes lengthy essays by Heisenberg, Schroedinger, de Broglie, Jeans, Planck, Pauli, and Eddington. Albert Einstein, who never claimed to be a mystic, did write:
“The most beautiful and most profound experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. To know that what is impenetrable to us really exists, manifesting itself as the highest wisdom and the most radiant beauty which our dull faculties can comprehend only in their primitive forms – this knowledge, this feeling is at the center of true religiousness.”
Ashley’s is justified in the statement “i believe that there is no god, heaven, hell, satan, or any of that. i just dont see how they could all exist up in the sky and being all god like and heavenly or some dude down underground where the middle of the earth is supposed to be”.
Anyone over about 6 years of age should rightly reject this 2nd grade level of understanding of religion.
You cannot understand, accept/reject or use science without developing a suitable and current understanding of its concepts, methologies and practices.
Likewise you cannot understand, accept/reject or practice religion until you have developed a suitable and current understanding of its concepts, methologies and practices.
