Tests For The Large Hadron Collider Computer System

Sunday May 18, 2008
With all of the focus on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) coming on-line this fall, it bears some comment that the logistical complexities of the situation go far beyond the development of the machine itself. An article in International Science Grid This Week points out that the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) is also being completed. This computer network will have to collect and process massive amounts of data from the LHC and it is only through these final "dress rehearsals" that the glitches can be worked out in order to be fully operational for the launch of the system. The sole purpose of the LHC is to gather accurate information, so if the computer system isn't in a position to process that information then there's little point to the whole enterprise.
