  • July 18, 1853 - Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz is born. Lorentz received the 1902 Nobel Prize in physics for his work with Pieter Zeeman in discovering and defining the Zeeman effect. Lorentz is known best to posterity for creating a set of mathematical transformations for space and time under motion. These Lorentz transformations were ultimately used as part of Einstein's theory of relativity.
