  • Oct. 17, 1604 – Astronomer Johannes Kepler observes a new bright star appearance in the Ophiuchus constellation. It becomes known as Kepler’s Star, and is the most recent supernova in the Milky Way galaxy.
  • Oct. 21, 1833 - Alfred Nobel, Swedish inventor of dynamite and founder of the Nobel Prize, is born.
  • Oct. 22, 1881 - Clinton Davisson, American physicist and Nobel laureate, is born.
  • Oct. 17, 1887 – German physicist Gustav Kirchhoff dies. Kirchoff did extensive work in spectroscopy and coined the term “black body radiation.” He is best known for his work in electronic circuitry, where Kirchhoff’s Laws are among the most fundamental concepts in electronics.
  • Oct. 20, 1891 - James Chadwick, English physicist & Nobel laureate, is born.
  • Oct. 19, 1910 - Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Indian-born physicist and Nobel laureate, is born.
  • Oct. 18, 1931 - Thomas Edison, American inventor, dies.
  • Oct. 17, 1933 - Albert Einstein moves to the United States to flee the rise of Nazi Germany.
  • Oct. 21, 1957 - Wolfgang Ketterle, German physicist & Nobel laureate, is born.
