Bio-Fuels: Future or Failure?

Monday May 1, 2006
In the last week, I've come across two articles focusing on biofuels, no doubt as part of the greater interest in Earth Day, as well as the rising gasoline prices. Biofuel is fuel created from organic materials, such as corn, and is therefore a renewable resource which generally produces less pollution than fossil fuels.

Popular Mechanics released their article "How Far Can You Drive on a Bushel of Corn?" in the May 2006 issue (and their website). This article addresses not only the pros and cons of biofuel, but also makes comparisons to other alternative fuel sources such as electric power and hydrogen fuel cells. It's a comprehensive look at the subject, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in these alternative fuel options.

The other article is a bit more narrow in scope. It is from the local Indianapolis independent paper, Nuvo, and focuses on Indiana's role in the development of this technology.
