Scientific Methods

Sunday April 9, 2006

The scientific method is used by scientists to reach objective, hopefully accurate conclusions about the natural world. Scientists quantify nature's physical properties with measurable units, which are then applied with intellect, imagination, and creativity in experiments to gain understanding of the governing principles at work. Recent additions to the site explain how scientists use these tools in their work.

For the science student, an early mathematical stumbling block can be the use of significant figures and scientific notation. In those instances when you run into trouble remembering how formulas or quantities relate to each other, being familiar with units of measurement can help. Familiarizing yourself with these concepts can help remove mistakes and distractions from studying science, allowing you to focus on the more complex issues - how to use the tools of science to explain or predict natural phenomena.
